Wonder Why?- Flushing

Flushing

Routine Flushing

As water flows through the distribution system and continues to age, certain water quality parameters can gradually change over time. This can potentially affect the overall taste, odor, and freshness of the water that reaches your tap. To ensure that you always have access to clean, fresh, and high-quality drinking water, the water district follows a routine flushing schedule for various sections of the distribution system. Regular flushing is a proactive approach that helps maintain water quality by ensuring that stagnant or older water is cleared out and replaced with fresh, properly treated water.

Flushing helps to ensure that the water delivered to your tap contains the maximum allowable level of disinfectants, which helps prevent harmful bacteria or pathogens from growing in the system. Additionally, this process minimizes issues related to taste and odor, which can sometimes occur when water sits in the pipes for extended periods. During warmer months, the flushing process becomes even more important, as the higher temperatures tend to degrade disinfection chemicals at a faster rate, potentially reducing the effectiveness of water treatment efforts. By flushing the system more frequently during these months, the water district is able to counteract this effect and maintain optimal water quality throughout the entire system.

You may notice water running from fire hydrants or blow-off valves in certain areas of the system. This is typically a sign that the water district is actively conducting routine flushing in that area. If you see an HCWD#2 crew or employee engaged in flushing activities, please do not be alarmed. This is a normal and essential part of the District’s efforts to keep your water safe and fresh. Feel free to wave hello to the crew while they work to maintain the system! The entire process is designed with your safety and convenience in mind, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
